The Hochar Family And Château Musar

Image
Château Musar is the name of a Lebanese winery in Ghazir, Lebanon, 15 miles north of the capital Beirut. Musar grapes grow in the Beqaa Valley, a fertile sunny valley at an altitude of ca. 1,000 metres (3,300 ft), situated 25 miles east of Beirut. The winery was established by Gaston Hochar in 1930 after returning from Bordeaux. The current proprietors are the sons, Ronald and Serge Hochar, the latter managing the estate since 1959, with Ronald Hochar assuming marketing and finance department responsibilities since 1962. In 1959, Serge Hochar becomes Chateau Musar winemaker, while completing his winemaking studies at the University of Oenology in Bordeaux, under the tutorage of Jean Riberau and Emile Peynaud. The international discovery of Musar took place at the Bristol Wine Fair of 1979 when auctioneer and taster Michael Broadbent and journalist Roger Voss selected Musar 1967 as the "discovery of the Fair". Despite war in Lebanon and frequent tension, with the excep...

The Wild Discovery Travel And Tourism Story

Image
Ever since its creation in 1997, Wild Discovery has "set a new trend in the way people approach and buy package holiday in Lebanon and beyond". LOL. The company has "successfully been innovating year after year and creating new products that have led to new experiences (and discoveries) around the globe". LOL. In order to accomplish this lofty goal, Wild Discovery boasts a team of experienced product managers, travel consultants, tour leaders and guides that work hand in hand to bring the agency's customers the best of what each destination has to offer, without omitting the little details (and we all know how the little details can make or break what was supposed to be a dream escape gone... wrong). Those little details are often what make the difference and it's refreshing to deal with an agency that doesn't get that! With more than 10 branches spread over Syria, Lebanon and the UAE and with more than 100 collaborators, Wild Discovery is today one o...

Bustani, Khoury, Shammas And The C.A.T. Group

Image
The C.A.T. Group has played a significant and proud role in the history of 20th Century contracting. Established in Haifa in 1937, the Contracting And Trading (C.A.T.) Company experienced both the sufferings and the aspirations of the tumultuous area. Founder Emile Bustani was joined by partners, Abdallah Khoury and Shukri Shammas, to form a company of the same name and with the same corporate emblem, the well-known black cat. After the death of the founders, the partners strategically established in 1993 an international corporate structure. C.A.T. Holding S.A. was registered in Luxembourg and took oversight of all contracting activities. The Board of Directors of C.A.T. Holding S.A. regroup six members of the three owning families, Bustani, Khoury and Shammas, and three independent members known for their integrity and prominence in the profession. Those changes were complemented with the creation of a new and modern structure, based on the separation between the ownership and ...

Levant And Middle East Private Equity And Venture Capital

Image
Everywhere I look (and I look under every stone these days…), I see and read about the great entrepreneurial boom spreading across the MENA region. From Berytech Fund’s 50 million upcoming fund to Middle East Venture Partners’ 50 million USD fund to Fadi Ghandour’s upcoming 75 million USD fund to Haddad Advisory’s 100 million USD fund, there seems to be a huge amount of capital out there chasing what should ideally be an equal amount of great startups. But is that really the case? Having looked into the Lebanon and Levant private equity and venture capital scene, the UAE private equity and venture capital scene, the GCC private equity and venture Capital scene, the MENA seed funding, early stage financing and angel investors scene, etc… I get the same sense of uneasiness that something is not quite right. There seems to be way too much money chasing way too little quality startups. In other terms, demand vastly exceeds supply. And that spells out one thing and one alone: bubble! An...

Naif Al-Mutawa, Teshkeel Media Group And The 99

Image
Teshkeel Media Group was formed in 2004. It’s business and social objectives were to create exciting animated television programs for young families and children throughout the world. The idea was to offer new role models of superheroes born of Middle East history and Islamic archetypes that possess values shared by the entire world. Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, the creator of THE 99 saw a need for new role models that children from China to Chad to Canada could relate to as their own without the parochial influence of any nation, religion or individual. Dr. Naif Al Mutawa of Kuwait, creator of comic book and animated series The 99, has worked with Teshkeel Media Group to expand his brand around the world. The series showcases 99 superheroes that reference Islamic culture and society and express universal values in their struggle to share light and battle the forces of evil. While creating the story has been controversial in different markets, its message has been well-received globally...

Ahmad Zahran, David McKern And Infinitec

Image
Founded in 2008 by Ahmad Zahran, of Palestinian origin, and David McKern, Infinitec was initially funded through a successful kickstarter campaign and is now based in Dubai, UAE. Infinitec created the world’s first “Pocket TV,” which plugs into and turns any TV with an HMDI input into a “Smart TV,” and an Infinite USB Memory (IUM) Drive that connects to server space through the cloud. With several other products in development, Infinitec is challenging the known boundaries of technology. They have developed products with the potential to transform international data storage and Smart TV markets in powerful ways and are quickly expanding out of MENA. If they succeed, this will be a rare case of a MENA born hardware technology startup making it beyond MENA borders. Indeed, MENA startups have been gaining both traction and attention beyond MENA borders but these startups have tended to be for the vast majority software, online media and e-commerce plays. A hardware "hit" would...

Attahri, Bernoussi, Azariz And Greendizer

Image
Greendizer is an innovative startup that has developed a free invoice management platform. The company was co-founded in Morocco, a country seeing like many MENA countries a flurry of new and exciting technology startups emerging from what seems like... nowhere, by Mohamed Attahri, Hamza Bernoussi, and Amine Azariz. The startup has set its mind to revolutionize invoicing (not the sexiest business segment on planet Earth but one worth billions of dollars), enticing users to go green with paperless services, an open source approach, and a sleek interface. By offering its groundbreaking service for free, Greendizer intends to attract an otherwise untapped market, pulling in customers who want to try out this new type of invoicing for the first time. Rising quickly on the back of the Moroccan and French markets, Greendizer has its sights on a broader audience and feels that their service has an edge over the international competition. If so, Morocco could rapidly become a new "start...

Elias Khoury, Elie-Grégoire Khoury And Dermandar

Image
Dermandar, a small tech startup based in Beirut, Lebanon, has created an innovative iPhone app, DMD Panorama, which takes amazing and incredibly high quality 360° panoramic photos that users can then, for example, easily share online. Co-founded by Elias Fadel Khoury and Elie-Grégoire Khoury, Dermandar has had over 4 million downloads worldwide! The mighty Wall Street Journal described it as, "The easiest-to-use panoramic picture app on the iPhone.” Not bad for a company started out of a "garage". But hey, wait a second, wasn't the most valuable company on planet Earth (Apple and the last time I checked) started in a really really really similar way with two guys (one a Syrian orphan) working from... a garage?! LOL! With such a simple and innovative iPhone app, available for download online at the Apple Store, it is no wonder Dermandar is ready to go global. We wish them the best of luck in what is an incredibly competitive field but incredibly rewarding too when...

Waheed Barghouti And Dakwak: Crowd-Driven Translation

Image

Dakwak aims to tackle the issues businesses face when expanding into international globalized markets such as the Middle East and North Africa. Instead of having to open a website’s backend to a translation services (the typical modus operandi to date if and when you want to have your site translated into, let's say, Arabic), Dakwak only needs a website’s URL and desired language to complete its advanced translation service. Thanks to its emphasis on Research and Development, Dakwak was voted one of the best users of technology in 2011. The company is already expanding to other regions and markets, offering a highly desired service in a simpler and less intrusive way. What's not to like? Subscribe to MENA Opportu...

Hind Hobeika and The Instabeat Story

Image
Instabeat is an innovative startup company founded by Hind Hobeika in Lebanon, a country that is seeing an entrepreneurial boom of its own thanks to the Lebanese people's "hardwired" entrepreneurial spirit, keen business sense and recent forward thinking economic policies and governmental stimulus packages., most notably the Lebanese Central Bank's bold moves to promote investment in early stage Lebanese startups. Instabeat has developed swimming goggles that integrate essential electronic applications for all swimmers. Founder Hind Hobeika, a young Lebanese entrepreneur, overcame the challenges of being a hardware entrepreneur with the help of Stars of Science. The first version of the product includes a heart rate monitor that continuously and instantaneously tracks the heart rate of an athlete during activity, and gives them real-time visual feedback inside their goggles. By allowing athletes to monitor their performance closely and track progress over time, In...

Ronaldo Mouchawar On Souq.com's Sucess Story...

Image
Now in its ninth year, Souq.com is getting some real wind in its sails. Now undeniably the largest e-commerce platform in the Middle East and North Africa, the company has secured $75 million USD (AED 275.5m) from Naspers Limited, the South African multinational media and internet group that preivously invested $40 milion in Souq in 2012. This brings the total amount of investment raised by Souq.com to $150 million USD (AED 551m) to date, placing it beyond rivals Namshi (which has raised $34 million USD to date) and MarkaVIP (which has raised $18 million USD to date, and is likely due for another round soon). Rumors place Souq's current valuation at over $400 million. Although Souq didn't secure other investors for this round, the move demonstrates that Naspers is betting on the growth of Middle East e-commerce in the long term.  Although Souq was founded in 2005, it's hit a growth curve in the past two years, expanding 10 fold, the company says. Today, the site boasts ...

Image
Following the closure of its offices in Egypt earlier this year, Yahoo Maktoob has rolled out some recent annoucements to demonstrate new content and customization. Its announcements are't groundbreaking (its homepage will be customized), but the company will be adding new video and entertainment content with coverage of the World Cup 2014 and a new partnership with Saudi video content company UTURN. This Monday at the Ritz Carlton in Dubai, Yahoo Maktoob's regional leads announced that the company would be customizing the homepage, upgrading its Weather, Flickr, and Horoscope apps, while turning its news feed into a stream of real-time content.  “The homepage is the front door of Yahoo and we should take good care of it”, said Amina Rached, Head of Media MEA (Middle East and Africa). She added, “the chances of each one present in the room to have the same homepage are very low.” While Yahoo Maktoob sticks to tried-and-true products on its homepage, it's also focusing ...
